Just the proof...

...that I didn't do the same mistake again! My ticket is here (not a fancy one for my collection though).

Something interesting I found about the receipt they sent me was the message on its bottom right corner. Unfortunately, I'm getting so used to see radical right-wing people in Hardcore shows around here, that it's good for change to see that there are still people that fight against ideals that do not belong to the Hardcore scene. "Keep your country tidy!"

Rurouni Kenshin OVA: Trust & Betrayal

I’ve watched this DVD for the first time some years ago, but now that my roommate decided to give it a try, I took the opportunity to re-watch it (again! Oh yeah, I’m a nerd when it comes to Animes, Mangas and other Doujins.). If you are familiar with the TV show “Samurai X” that was aired in Portugal by the end of the 90’s, then you probably will recognize this name right away. Rurouni Kenshin, or Samurai X, as the Americans and Europeans like to call it, was one of the most popular Mangas in Japan in the mid 90’s. Later, an Anime version was produced, which made Kenshin Himura one of the most famous characters ever in Japanese animation.

The “Trust and Betrayal” OVA (Original Video Animation) was released after the TV series were over in Japan, and it tells the story of Kenshin during the Meiji Revolution, back when he was still a manslayer. In other words, this OVA is a prequel that answers many of the unanswered questions left by the TV series. Consisting of 4 episodes, this OVA takes the world of Rurouni Kenshin to a whole different level. Forget about all the comical moments that we were used to watch on TV. Here we have some serious animation, with very deep and well developed characters. Japanese culture at the time is portrayed in a superb way, with several details that give the story a complete different depth.

However, if you’re just expecting to see brutal and violent scenes, which this OVA also has, than you will be disappointed. The main focus of “Trust and Betrayal” is not the bloodbaths brought by the Battousai. Instead, these 4 episodes evolve around a beautiful and tragic romance in an epoch of blood and chaos.
The art and animation are way better than those of the TV series, sometimes with even excessive detail in the brutality of the fighting scenes. You can also expect a high quality soundtrack, which taken together with the animation, offers an amazing cinematographic experience.

If you were a fan of the Samurai X TV series, or if you are into Japanese animation, than I can guarantee that you will love this. In my opinion, it still is one of the best OVAs out there.

I should have known better...

This is what you get when you don’t know how things work in a different country. Remember the nice Madball and friends show at Rotterdam? I’m not going. I tried to buy my ticket one week in advance, and the response I got was “I’m so sorry the show sold out 2 weeks ago”. I never saw a Hardcore show running out of tickets in Portugal, but oh well, this ain’t the land of Fado is it? As my Portuguese friends must be thinking now – ESTUDASSES!

It isn’t the end of the world though. The party was delayed only for few days. Instead of partying with the Dutch, I will have to do it with the Germans. I think Cologne is even closer to Maastricht than Rotterdam.

8th of March - Cologne, Germany

The ticket is on it's way!!!

Movies Night

Even though I’m not a big fan of zombie movies, last night I decided to give Danny Boyle’s movie a try. Surprisingly, or not, “28 Days Later” is a very entertaining movie. It all starts with a group of activists who get into a laboratory to set free some chimpanzees that were being subject to experiments. What these activists didn’t know was that the chimpanzees were infected with a highly contagious virus that causes rage. 28 days later, Jim – the main character – wakes up from a coma in a hospital. Soon he realizes that he is all by himself in an abandoned city infested by zombies. During his quest to find a “promised paradise” where the cure was already available, Jim meets some other survivors that will join him in his “adventure”. By the scenario set up here, we could say that it’s just another zombie’s movie, but actually, what makes this a good movie, is the emphasis that Boyle puts on the human relationships and on the brutal truth about the human nature when it comes to survival. Regarding this last point, Boyle could have a gone a little bit further in exploring this topic, but I don’t think that was his main priority when he was creating this movie.
One last note must be made for the beautiful shots of the abandoned London, the burning Manchester, and their amazing surrounding landscapes.
I wouldn’t say this is a must-see movie, but it certainly qualifies as one within its genre.

And since Carnival week is still going here in Maastricht and I don’t have to worry about waking up and going to school, me and my roommate decided to go for another movie. This time we picked one that has been in my “must-download" list for quite a while now. “Let the right one in” is probably one of the most beautiful and disturbing movies I’ve watched in the past few months.

“I was expecting some blood and some scary stuff, but instead I think I got the most unexpected film experience so far this year. I mean, this movie is really good!” by WalkTheWalk

For this one I’m not even going to write a small review. Instead, I’m going to give you the link for the review that motivated me to watch this movie, which basically says everything I would say about it. Complete review here: http://walkthiswalk.wordpress.com/2009/07/16/let-the-right-one-in/

The American Feeling

Yesterday was the Super Bowl night! I’ve been watching the NFL playoffs the past weeks, and I gotta say, there’s more in this sport than what usually European people think. I always knew that the Super Bowl was a big deal in the US, and so, at my 23 I decided for the first time to stay up, have a couple of beers with some American friends and watch the game.

I’m not here to talk about the game though. I guess that yesterday, for the first time in my life, I really felt the need to know more about the culture of the country where I was born. I will always be Portuguese and feel like a Portuguese, however, when the American anthem was playing yesterday, I felt ashamed for not even having an idea about the lyrics, or whatever they talk about. I’ve been hanging around with my buddy Trent from the US and I’ve met a couple of interesting American guys, and now, more than ever, I feel the need to go back to the US and take some time to know the place. An internship of 6 months after the master’s degree, working for Eletronic Arts sounds appealing. It is worth the shot!

(Oh and by the way, Municipal Waste in Amsterdam was awesome!! A review will be posted in my other blog soon.)

Saturday!!! Feeling Pumped!!!!

Oh yeah baby, "Municipal Waste is gonna fuck you up!"
Back at my home country it was like this few months ago:

Back! Hello 2010!

It has been more than one month since I’ve written for the blog. The mood was not the best one even though a lot of interesting stuff has happened. Now that I took some time for myself and put my mind back to where it should be, I’m back to my blog.

On my way back to Maastricht after the New Year’s Eve I stopped by Madrid to meet a very good friend that was doing Erasmus there (big up Rita for taking me to that “Montaditos” place”). I had my third block of classes, which was mainly bullshit as it was just a couple of classes on how to write a Master’s Thesis. Meanwhile I’ve been reading some papers and articles, and I finally have a topic for my thesis, something around User Innovation and the video games industry, but I’m still looking for a supervisor that suits my topic. Still, January wasn’t a demanding month at all. I had time to go out several times, being one of those an awesome classical music concert in a church in Maastricht, I visited a good old friend that is now living in Utrecht (thanks for everything Ricardo), and finally I went to Amsterdam for the Dropkick Murphys show, which was awesome by the way.

The fourth block started yesterday, and now it’s time to get serious again. Oh wait! I still have another weekend in Amsterdam with a bunch of Portuguese guys that are coming to visit me! To make things even better, while we are there we’re gonna see Municipal Waste playing! I’m leaving tomorrow, and coming back on Sunday afternoon.

Feels good to be back.
